Koishiwara Ware (called Koishiwara Yaki in Japanese) is porcelain produced in theToho Village of Fukuoka prefecture. From its creation, Koishiwara Ware has been developped as a practical, beautiful and highly original porcelain.
Special character of Koishiwara Ware is the patterns that develop with rotating on a potter’s wheel. Some other notable features of this porcelain are its elegant texture, beautiful form, and a charming color expression despite its simplicity and practicality. It is popular as a traditional handcrafted souvenir for foreign people.
These are main methods to create patterns
・Tobikanna (Flying Plane) : Only the areas where the plane touches are shaved, creating a pattern.
・Hakeme (Brush Marks) : Immediately after applying the slip, the pattern is created by brush while the potter’s wheel is rotating.
・Kushime (Comb Marks) : Immediately after applying the slip, a comb-like tool with multiple prongs is used to create patterns such as wavy lines.
・Nagashikake (Pouring) : While slowly rotating the potter’s wheel, glaze and other materials are poured onto the surface of the piece at equal intervals.
・Uchikake (Pouring) : This is the technique making patterns pouring glaze by ladle which is stored in small cup or similar container little by little onto the shaped piece.
